General
Color has more than 62 years of history. Just look around your home
or office and chances are you'll see our color at work.
1938 - The founding of the company by George C. Gartner.
1945 - Relocated in Minerva, Ohio, General Color now encompasses
12,000 square feet and manufactures products for the ceramic industry.
1948 - The company is incorporated.
1959
- Recognizing a new market, General Color diversifies to encompass
the production of dry color pigments for use in thermoplastic resins.
With knowledge and expertise in color and a strategic location,
this move proved to be one of great foresight.
1966 - George C. Gartner passes away and his son Carl W. Gartner
is named to lead the company.
1970 - With our feet firmly in the plastics and ceramics industries,
we expand our manufacturing to include the glass decorating enamel
industry. Our background again made this a natural step.
1971- General Color purchases an adjacent property which includes
a 90,000 square foot building and ten acres for expansion of the
ever growing Plastic Colors Division. The Ceramic Division has grown
to fill the original facility which encompasses 88,000 square feet
and seven acres.
1972 - Color Concentrates are added to the Plastic Colors Division.
1982 - A Research Development and Quality Control Laboratory is
added for our expanding plastic customer base. Introduction of X
Series as a universal concentrate.
1992 - A 57,000 square foot shipping and receiving warehouse for
the Plastic Colors Division is completed.
1993 - The Ceramics Division names a new manager and additional
technicians to concentrate on expanding the glass decorating industry
market base.
1996 - Introduction of the Blendfast Family of Colors for the ceramic
and glass decorating industries. Ultra High color Concentrates are
introduced for the plastics industry.
1998 - Plastics Division - New high capacity extruder line goes
on line.
1999

2001
- Carl W. Gartner retires. Keith W. Gartner takes position to lead
the company.
2003 - General Color focuses exclusively on the production and support
of plastic colorants. The acquisition of the Ceramic and Glass division
by Shepherd Color Company of Cincinnati marks this transition.
